Delacorte Press, $17.99 hardcover, ISBN-10 038574126X, May 2014
A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
The blurb covers everything one can say about this book without spoiling anything for the reader. I’m struggling to think of plot details to add, and I think I’m going to leave it alone!
Suffice to say, E. Lockhart continues to shock and amaze. Her style here is more similar to Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks than The Boyfriend List. She’s written a mystery without following the traditional mystery format. Readers don’t just have to ask, “Whodunnit?” They have to wonder, “Who did it? What IS it? Who was it done to? And what did the heroine have to do with it?” Complex, nonlinear, brilliant, and terribly sad.
Warning: Bad things happen to good dogs in this story!
Recommend to: Mature readers, fans of the author, mystery lovers
To buy or not to buy: A good purchase for public library YA collections
