The Glorkian Warrior Delivers a Pizza
by James Kochalka
First Second, $17.99 hardcover, ISBN-10 1626721033, March 2014
The Glorkian Warrior isn’t the brightest bulb in the box, so it’s good he’s got his trusty talking backpack to advise him as they set out on a perilous journey to deliver a pizza. The pizza’s got clams and peanut butter on it, so it’s not clear who’s going to want it, but deliver it they will.
This graphic novel definitely takes the cake for stupid humor value. When I say stupid humor, I don’t mean that the book is stupid, of course. I mean the humor relies heavily on knee-slappers, miscommunication, and slapstick. The Glorkian Warrior’s a nice enough guy, but he’s definitely a few rockets shy of a jet pack. Super Backpack, his sidekick, is much brighter, but the GW blows off everything he says, and since SB is hanging on GW’s back, GW gets his way every time.
Impediments to the delivery of the truly disgusting pizza (not only is it clam and peanut butter, it’s leftovers) include a little Glorkian with a giant battle suit, a flying saucer containing a baby alien dog-octopus thing, and an all-powerful robot. Oh, and the wrong address.
Adult readers might think this one’s a groaner, but it’s absolutely perfect for upper elementary readers who will find the gags hilarious.
Recommend to: Upper elementary comic fans and anyone who loves dumb gags.
To buy or not to buy: Great for public library children’s graphic novel collections.
