I Am Pusheen the Cat

By Claire Belton

Touchstone, ISBN-10 1476747016, $14.99 trade paper, October 2013

This collection of oh-so-cute kitty comics—an online cult phenomenon, now for the first time in an adorable gift book—Pusheen combines the online reach of The Oatmeal’s How to Tell if Your Cat Is Plotting to Kill You with the super-sweet appeal of Hello Kitty. With more than 2 million page views a month, 500,000+ blog subscribers, and 500,000+ Facebook followers, Pusheen is a pleasantly tubby gray tabby cat who has warmed hearts and tickled funny bones of millions worldwide with her signature GIF animated bops, bounces, and tail wiggles. Now, Pusheen is ready to make the leap from digital to print with her first comic collection!

If you’re not a Pusheen fan, there are only three possible reasons:

  1. You hate cats.
  2. You hate cute.
  3. You never, ever use the Internet and have therefore never seen or heard of Pusheen.

If either of the first two are true, you should probably see someone about getting a soul transplant, since yours is obviously defective. If you belong to Group #3, hop on over to Pusheen’s blog and get some soul cuddles already. HER TOES LOOK LIKE BEANS, PEOPLE. HER TOES LOOK LIKE BEANS.

Pusheen isn’t marketed to children, but the mix of adorable cartoons and gentle but witty humor makes her perfect for the upper elementary set. Plus she has yet to kick dogs off tables (yeah, Garfield, we’re looking at you.) While Internet crazes live out their fame quickly, Pusheen will remain enjoyable and relevant to cat lovers long after the next big thing comes along.

Recommend to: Fans of Garfield, kitties, silly humor, and all things kawaii (HER TOES LOOK LIKE BEANS!)

To buy or not to buy: For larger collections, a definite buy. For tiny collections, maybe not a must-buy, but buy it anyway. BECAUSE TOE BEANS.
